How To Be An Optimist

Wednesday, May 05, 2004 (22:21:09)
I was recently visited by members of a religious group. They read me various passages of scripture which were designed to show me how bad the world has become. The picture they painted was very bleak. Now, being depressed in my own living room is not my favourite pastime and I'm not convinced that their 'marketing strategy' was up to much - basically, "this is what's happening but if you join us it will still continue to happen". I thanked them but also told them that I would continue to be an optimist in the spirit of Jesus.

Being Born Again - Is It All Bad?

Wednesday, May 05, 2004 (22:19:34)
"I am a Born-Again Christian".

There - I've said it.

Why the reticence? Well, in the UK there's a certain stigma attached to being Born-Again. By declaring yourself, people automatically fit you into one of three stereotypes:

Either you're a 'young lady' who relies on her 'personality' rather than her looks.
Or you're a young person, often dressed in nylon clothes, who's only happy standing in a field near Glastonbury, singing 'happy-clappy' songs accompanied by a single guitar.
Or you're an absolute fanatic who turns up on doorsteps on a Sunday morning and 'assaults' the householder with a Bible.

Making A Difference

I'll describe Alison (not her real name) for you. She's in her early twenties, very well-spoken and a committed Christian. She's also at university with the intention to become a teacher. As a consequence, she doesn't visit our local church very often; only during the holidays when she comes back to stay with her parents. Now I don't know Alison very well. I've seen her maybe a dozen times over the last couple of years but we seem to be able to empathise with each other. It all started one morning in church when Alison was sitting in the row in front of my wife and I.

How do you bring a non-Christian back to Christ?

To believe, you have to understand the nature of God. How can you persuade somebody to devote significant amounts of time to research something that they probably place in the same category as UFOs, ley-lines or the off-side rule? The answer, of course, is that you can't. Any more than you can persuade somebody to leap from a cliff.
