Daily Walk: Dust Off Your Dostoevsky

Monday, October 18, 2004 (04:20:00)
"Money is coined liberty, and so it is ten times dearer to a man who is deprived of freedom"
Dostoevsky (House Of The Dead, Part 1)

There are many different types of imprisonment. Some are imprisoned because they have committed crimes. Some are imprisoned by their government because they highlight the governments crimes. There are many millions of people in the world who are still bound to that most loathsome of things, slavery. But those are only physical imprisonment. What about those who are imprisoned by ignorance, fear or hatred. What of those who are encumbered with self-loathing? There are many who are chained by grief or guilt - or a sense of failure.

But let's return to Dostoevsky, shall we? Where does true freedom come from? Can you become free by storing riches, by salting away money to protect you from the world? Can money guard against death? Can wealth guarantee happiness? We all know the answer to that, don't we? And if you don't, then just have a quick glance at any newspaper for a fairly big hint.

But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is present, there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled faces reflecting the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another, which is from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 3:16-18

Real freedom comes from the Lord! And if you have that freedom, then mere money or physical imprisonment means nothing.
