The Church: What's Wrong With This Picture?

Saturday, October 16, 2004 (17:12:27)
CNN - Friday, October 15, 2004

CNN:
NEWNAN, Georgia (AP) -- Across the Bible Belt this Halloween, some little ghosts and goblins might get shooed away by the neighbors -- and some youngsters will not be allowed to go trick-or-treating at all -- because the holiday falls on a Sunday this year.
When I read the beginning of the article on the CNN web site, I'll admit my interest was piqued. When I read further, I shook my head in utter disbelief.
CNN:
"It's a day for the good Lord, not for the devil," said Barbara Braswell, who plans to send her 4-year-old granddaughter Maliyah out trick-or-treating in a princess costume on Saturday instead."
Do you see what I mean?

I can't be the only one to see the hypocrisy in statements like these. Either you believe Halloween is "for the devil" or you don't. The celebration of that festival is still a celebration of that festival, no matter what day if the week you celebrate it.

Here is another quote from the same article.
CNN:
"You just don't do it on Sunday," said Sandra Hulsey of Greenville, Georgia. "That's Christ's day. You go to church on Sunday, you don't go out and celebrate the devil. That'll confuse a child."
Okay, now I am really concerned. Apparently, there are a lot of Christians who think Halloween is only bad if it falls on Sunday because that's "Christ's day". How many other sinful things do they consider acceptable as long as you don't do them on "Christ's Day"?

What's wrong with this picture?

The church has a bigger problem than we can imagine if some Christians think like this. I hope the pastors of the churches these people attend are embarrassed. This is NOT the testimony the world should see.

Or is it just me?
