Daily Walk: Calories and Faith

Saturday, April 06, 2002 (22:58:27)
Has anyone every seen a calorie?

You hear about them on the news, read about them on food wrappers and see the results of them while standing on the bathroom scale.  But has anyone every REALLY seen a real, live calorie?  If you have, raise your hand.

No hands went up across the virtual auditorium. We'll sing one more verse of "Just As I Am (fat)" and see if anyone will come forward.  No? One more verse? [smile] I didn't think so.

The fact is, no one has seen a calorie, but we sure believe in them. How can that be?  I have never seen a volt either, but I can verify their existence by putting my finger in a light socket. I have not seen a hormone, but spend 5 minutes with a teenager and you will become a believer.

The fact is, no one has seen a calorie, but we sure believe in them. How can that be?  I have never seen a volt either, but I can verify their existence by putting my finger in a light socket. I have not seen a hormone, but spend 5 minutes with a teenager and you will become a believer. There are many things that we cannot see, but we believe in them because we see the results of their existence. Because of this belief, we modify our behavior. We learn how to eat properly because we know those extra calories will find their way onto our bodies. We learn to be careful with electricity to avoid electricution. We have not yet seen God face to face, but we still believe in Him. Believing is not enough. That belief must change our actions just as surely as our belief in calories or electricity has caused us to modify our behavior. James 2:14-18 14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Some say they believe in God. Some go further and say they have faith in God. Some go a step further and reveal their faith by their works. This is not only important, it is required. James 2:19-20 19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. 20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? Let me paraphrase: 19 So you say you believe in God; Big Deal. The devils believe and they tremble! Don't you know that your faith is absolutely worthless unless you show it in everything that you do? When was the last time you fed someone who was unable to feed themselves? How much extra food is in your pantry? How many pairs of shoes do you have that you are not wearing? How much is in your bank account? Faith?  That's not enough. You have to do something about it.
