Should Christians Shoot Burglars

Friday, March 01, 2002 (21:52:00)
It is 2:23 in the morning and the house is dark and silent. You are fast asleep, when all of a sudden you are awakened with a  [thump]. You open your eyes and shift them left and right, trying to see if it was just a dream. [THUMP] There it is again. It sounds as though someone is hurriedly rummaging through the cabinets downstairs. You shudder with fear for just a moment and hold your breath. There is definitely someone else in the house. You think "Shall I call out?"  "If they know I am awake, will I be in danger?"  "Maybe they'll leave."  You reach for a handgun tucked in the nightstand drawer and hold it tightly. Your bedroom door opens and a stranger stands there looking into the darkness.

As a Christian, what should you do?  Notice, I didn't say "What do you do?"  Rather, "What Should you do?"

People react differently in heat of passion, anger, fear, stress and pain, than they normally would with perfect circumstances. Your reactions are usually different than your actions. You might act differently during a situation if you have time to think. Your logic formulates alternatives for your mind to choose from. Your conscience keeps you from making immoral decisions. Sometimes, your parental instincts override concern for your own safety.

In the scenario described above, you do not have time to think about what to do. You will react, just as assuredly as tapping your knee makes your leg jump. Will you do the right thing or will you spend the rest of your life regretting your actions?

What would Jesus do?

Psalms 119:9-17
9
Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.
10 With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.
11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
12 Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes.
13 With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth.
14 I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches.
15 I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.
16 I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.
17 Deal bountifully with thy servant, that I may live, and keep thy word.

Notice verse 11. "Thy Word have I hid in mine heart that I might not sin against Thee." There is only one way to be sure your actions and reactions will be holy. Read the Word of God and let it fill your heart. You can prepare your soul for anything by studying the Word of God. God's Word can cleanse, heal, teach and guide. There is no greater book in all of the world.
